The Mango Industry in Mali
- The mango industry, with its many varieties, is one of the most promising sectors in Mali.
- Malian mangoes are prized on the sub-regional and international markets.
- Production is estimated at over 600,000 tonnes per year. (source : World Bank)
Farmer’s productivity
Of the 600,000 tonnes of mangoes produced in Mali only 6% were exported, 3-4% are locally consumed.
Yiriden in partnership with local and international organizations supports farmers and more generally the Malian agro-Industry in order to foster agricultural development.
Yiriden has 378 producers in the region of Sikasso totaling 1225 Hectars with a production capacity of 6000+tons of certified organic fresh mangoes which technically translate to ~600 Tons of dried organic mango. Our factory has an optimal total production capacity of 160T of dried mango depending on the caliber and varieties of fresh mangoes.
While demand is on the rise, the Malian mango sector is faced with the difficulty of supplying market players.
Dried Mango, a Real Potential to be Developed !!
The potential of the European and US dried mango market.
- The European and US dried mango market is expected to show steady volume growth of 5-6% per year.
- This growth is likely to be driven by changes in European consumer consumption patterns, including increasing demand for healthier snacks and a decline in consumption of sweet snacks.
- The USA, UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy present the best opportunities for developing country suppliers.
Project Information
Yiriden has its factory located in Sikasso, Mali. The Sikasso region accounts for 50% of Mali’s total mango production and is strategically located:
close to the main growing areas and directly bordering Côte d’Ivoire.
This enables us to load finished products in containers and ship them quickly and cost-effectively through the port of Abidjan — Mali’s most reliable gateway to international markets
Within the factory compound of our factory, we have established a 1-hectare model mango orchard showcasing more than 15 improved and local varieties. This on-site Orchard enables us to:
•Continuously test and select the highest-performing varieties
•Develop organic farming techniques that increase yields by 30–50 % per hectare
•Provide hands-on training and demonstration for our network of over partner farmers
Yiriden is in the organic production (BIO) and its products are certified by the European Union and the USA. Yiriden is a fully certified organic (BIO) processor holding both EU Organic and USDA Organic (NOP) certifications — the two highest and most demanding standards on the global market.
Since 2020, we have been successfully exporting premium organic dried mangoes, mango puree and concentrates to some of the world’s most selective markets:
* United States – East Coast (Pennsylvania) and West Coast (California)
* Europe – Germany and the Netherlands (Europe’s two largest organic import hubs)
Through a strategic partnership with GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) and other international organizations, Yiriden has built one of West Africa’s most robust certified-organic mango supply chains in Mali. Producers are trained or organic standards as well as employees in the factory.
Our Projects
Supporting Mango Producers in Sikasso
In partnership with local mango cooperatives, we have carried out several impactful projects in the Sikasso region of Mali. We have trained and successfully certified the orchards of 378 producers to both EU Organic (BIO) and Naturland standards.
